October 3, 2012
Our inaugural event was introduced by longtime Canadian activist, founding publisher of rabble.ca, and author of Occupy This!, Judy Rebick. Attendees were then treated to a presentation of shorts by filmmakers Velcrow Ripper, Ian MacKenzie, and Nova Ami from their feature-length documentary Occupy Love, which premiered the following evening at the Vancouver International Film Festival. This presentation was titled, ‘The Evolution is Love’.
Following the presentation there was a panel discussion featuring indie journalist David P. Ball, rabble.ca’s Derrick O’Keefe, and Dr. Kathleen Cross from SFU’s School of Communication talking about the challenges of documenting the Occupy movement.
The debate took place Thursday, October 3, 2012 at SFU’s Harbour Centre Campus (room # 1420-1430) and saw an attendance of approximately 150. It was moderated by Professor Stuart Poyntz (SFU Communication) and was organized as a part of the CounterCulture Speaker Series run by the Media Democracy Project, SFU’s Institute for the Humanities, and the SFU School of Communication.
