Participation Call Out for MDD 2016
MDD 2016 will be a community based collaborative event. Our aim is to provide a platform to grow and connect media activism in the city. To accomplish this, we’re hosting a Co-Lab on September 15th to get all our participants together to create our 2016 program.
We’re inviting people and groups from across the arts, independent journalism, activism, and media making to help build the MDD program by organizing a session in our program in November. A session will be a space in the program on November 19th of 45 – 80 minutes. It can be anything of your making that uses media to create a more just world, from workshops and media training, to group strategizing and talks, to performances, debates, and more we haven’t thought of yet!
We define media broadly, as the technologies, tools, and techniques used to communicate with the world.
Now in our 16th year, the annual MDD program will again take place in the Central Branch of the Vancouver Public Library on November 19th. We’ve taken a look at the incredible media activism in Vancouver and found seven different themes we’re calling “Tracks” we’d like to focus on for MDD 2016 (see below).
All that we ask that you bring to the Co-Lab is:
- An idea of what the aim of your session is based on our Tracks, and how you’d like to accomplish that aim.
- A list of what you have in your media activism arsenal
- A list of what resources or rolls you will need to make your session happen
Then comes the fun part! The Co-Lab will be a place to meet and partner with new people, and perhaps evolve and change the idea for you session. We want MDD to be accessible and participatory, so open yourself up to ideas, groups, and people you perhaps haven’t previously worked with.
At the end of the Co-Lab, we’ll hear from final groups for a showcase of their MDD 2016 sessions, and from there we’ll provide a mini-grant to each group in order to buy supplies, or pay themselves for the creation of a session. Then in just over two months, we see these sessions come to life at MDD 2016 on November 19th.
The Co-Lab happens on September 15th at 6PM at VIVO Media Arts Centre on the unceded territories belonging to the Coast Salish peoples, including the xʷməθkwəy̓əm (Musqueam), Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish), and Səl̓ílwətaʔ/Selilwitulh (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations.
A free dinner will be served (vegan and gluten free), and there will be a cash bar!
